XI Plan: Good performance but short of target

EM NEWS BUREAU ,  Friday, April 20, 2012, 16:03 Hrs  [IST]

The XI Plan (2007-12) is likely to end with a power generation capacity of 54,000 mw, according to power minister Sushilkumar Shinde quoted in media reports. This would be substantially higher than the X Plan achievement of 21,180 mw.

In the XI Plan period, private sector entities had a significant contribution to the new capacity added. Moreover, the final year of the XI Plan period, 2011-12, saw a record addition of 19,459 mw, around 60 per cent of which came from private sector units. Prior to this, the record for maximum power generation capacity in a single year was in 2010-11 when 12,160 mw came online. The original target for the XI Plan period was 78,500 mw that was downscaled to 62,000 mw.

As of March 27, 2012, India's total installed power generation capacity stood at 1,92,792 mw.
