National Solar Policy on November 14

, Thursday, October 01, 2009, 11:19 Hrs  [IST]

The Centre is likely to launch the National Solar Policy on November 14. The policy is dubbed to be a major boost to the solar energy sector, according to renewable energy minister Dr. Farooq Abdullah.
The policy will give widespread incentives to solar power generation and is expected to lure large scale investors from both Indian and foreign investors. The country's dependence on fossil fuel is unsustainable, the minister observed, adding that this called for investment in renewables like solar, wind and biomass.
India has little achievement in grid-connected solar power projects with such capacity currently standing at a mere 2 mw. On the other hand, wind energy has made rapid progress. By 2020, the national goal is to attain 20,000 mw of grid-connected solar power capacity.
