Numeric Power Systems Ltd, a Chennai-based UPS manufacturer, is entering solar energy and LED (light emitting diode) lighting segments, a company official told Electrical Monitor, adding that the solar power plant-the company's first independent power project (IPP)-would come up in Coimbatore.
The company has so far installed 14 solar power projects in India and another six overseas at an investment of around Rs 1 crore. These projects with capacities ranging between 3-5 kw were implemented as a backup for banking and insurance companies.
The official said, "The process of implementing the IPP has been rather slow due to many reasons and it will be some time before work on the project begins."
He explained that the proposed solar plant of 1 mw would cost around Rs 25 crore to build and the generated power would be sold to Tamil Nadu Electricity Board at Rs 15.15 per kwh; of which Rs 12 will be paid as subsidy by the ministry of new and renewable energy.
Land will not be a constraint as the company intends to set up the plant at its existing 1.5-mw wind farm near Coimbatore, which already supplies the power to TNEB.
The company has also executed an LED lighting project of 7 to 8 kw in a 160 sq. ft showroom in Chennai at an estimated cost of Rs 12 lakh.
The seven manufacturing units of Numeric Power Systems-six in Tamil Nadu and one in Himachal Pradesh-manufacture 400 UPS per day with an output of 8,000 KVA per day. The company plans to expand to 16,000 KVA per day by unveiling another 4,000 KVA plant in Himachal by June and modernising its existing plants to handle higher capacities.
