Essar Steel sets up waste-heat power plant

Essar Steel has commissioned a 19-mw waste heat recovery power plant at Hazira. The plant will use heat generated during the manufacturing process through the hot briquetted iron waste heat recovery boiler (HBI-WHR) and also surplus steam from the blast furnace boilers to generate electricity. The power generated will be internally consumed making the Hazira steel complex energy-efficient apart from reducing the power costs of the company.

Dilip Oommen, MD & CEO, Essar Steel India said, "We are a responsible steel producer, our focus is to have facilities which are both, cost efficient and environmentally friendly. It is a matter of pride for us that the entire process for this project from concept to commissioning, was carried out by Essar team".

The company would also benefit with the availability of carbon credits due to the reduction in emission of green house gases.

Essar Steel can also utilize the power more effectively without any transmission losses or leakages of power due to the proximity of the plant in Hazira, a company statement noted.

Essar Energy has announced that one unit of its 2x255-mw Vadinar Phase 2 power project in Gujarat has been synchronized with the transmission grid. The second unit is being readied for synchronization. Most of the power generated from this project will be supplied to Essar Oil's Vadinar petroleum refinery. Earlier in 2012, Essar Energy fully commissioned its 1,200-mw Salaya-I project in Gujarat. Its 1,200-mw Mahan-I project in Madhya Pradesh will be synchronized to grid soon. Essar Energy's total installed capacity is now over 4,500 mw.
