EM BUREAU ,  Saturday, May 29, 2010, 11:19 Hrs  [IST]

State Bank of India has become the first bank in India to install wind farms for captive power generation. As part of the first phase, the bank has already operationalized 15 mw of wind farms spread over Maharashtra (9 mw), Tamil Nadu (4.5 mw) and Gujarat (1.5 mw). Electricity generated will be used by SBI facilities across the three states.

The multi-state project was executed by Suzlon Energy Ltd with a gestation period of just four months, a release from the Pune-based wind energy company said. The farms are equipped with 10 units of S-82 1.5mw turbine generators.

SBI is also planning to set up 20 mw of wind power capacity, on the same lines, in Gujarat. The bank is awaiting clarification from Gujarat Energy Development Authority on the feasibility of wheeling power even to the bank's LT consumption points, SBI Chairman O.P. Bhatt noted in a statement.
