Free 49,000 power connections for BPL people

The government will be providing 49,000 free power connections to below poverty line (BPL) people in the villages.

The connections will be provided by the power utilities to the applicants under the Rajiv Gandhi Vidyutikarn Yojna Nigam of the Rural Electrification Corporation scheme. The Nigam will get hundred per cent subsidy for the purpose.

The Centre has sanctioned Rs 48.48 crore under the scheme for carrying out various power development works in Sonepat, Panipat, Rohtak and Karnal districts.

The scheme would cover as many as 1,070 villages in these districts. The project entails improvement of the power distribution system, installation of distribution transformers, erection of 11 KV and other lines. A total of 1,437-km-long 11 KV lines and 368-km-long new tension lines would be erected, and 987 distribution transformers would be installed under the scheme. Meters will also be installed on the distribution transformers. All the works is to be completed in 12 months.
