I
ndia's power sector crossed a
milestone in April this year
when its total installed
generation capacity crossed the 2-
lakh mw mark. The achievement
was recorded with one 660-mw unit
of CLP India's Jhajjar power plant
was declared commercial.
India's total power capacity now
stands at 2,00,287 mw that includes
1,32,013 mw in the thermal sector,
38,991 mw in hydropower, 4,780 mw
in nuclear sector and 24,503 mw in
renewable energy sector. At the end
of the XI Plan period (March 31,
2012), the total installed capacity
was 1,99,627 mw.
In the XI Plan period, a total of
54,964 mw of new capacity was
added comparing very favourably
with the performance in the X Plan
(21,180 mw) and the IX Plan (19,010
mw). New benchmarks were set with
FY12 alone seeing the addition of
20,501 mw of power capacity.
Poor availability, nonetheless:
The per-capita consumption of
electricity in the country during the
year 2009-10 was 778.63 kwh per
annum as against the global average
of 2730 kwh for the year 2009. As per
the National Electricity Policy 2005,
per capita availability of electricity
is to be increased to over 1,000
kwhby 2012. However, it is
estimated that per capita
consumption of electricity would
reach 1,257 kwh only by FY17.
