At the inaugural session of
ELROMA 2012 organized by
IEEMA (Indian Electrical &
Electronics Manufacturers'
Association), Pentti Norovuori,
Global Head Sales, (Motors &
Generators), ABB Ltd, Prague said
that motor-driven applications have
enormous energy saving potential
and that millions of electric motors
that drive machines, compressors,
fans, pumps or conveyors in many
sectors account for about 67 per cent
of the electricity used by industry.
The theme of ELROMA 2012
consciously seeks to look for answers to
the big and evolving pictures of our
future, and invites the best minds
across the world to actively participate
and contribute to make our world a
better, cleaner, and more efficient place.
ELROMA is an international
technical conference dealing with the
rotating machines industry. Held
every four years, it offers an
international platform for
information exchange, technical
discussion and a means to obtain firsthand
knowledge of current industry
trends. First held in 1983, ELROMA
2012 was the eighth in its series.
During his keynote address on
"Energy efficiency - Potential for
Motor Driven Applications"
Norovuori observed, "ABB has long
supported the need for efficiency in
motors, and high efficiency products
have formed the core of its portfolio
for many years. ABB is at the
forefront of efforts to reduce global
energy consumption and carbon
dioxide emissions by supplying safe,
reliable and efficient motors"
Speaking at the event, Ramesh
Chandak, President, IEEMA said
"Bridging the demand and supply gap
of electricity while maintaining
quality of power is an emerging
challenge. This can be better managed
with Smart Grids and that IEEMA is in
the process of putting in place a smart
grid cell - a discussion / action forum
comprising of senior representatives
from power ministry, utilities, IT
industries and IEEMA members"
In this address, Chief Guest Nakul
Mehta, Vice Chairman & Managing
Director, Bharat Bijlee Ltd, said,
"During the next five years from 2012
to 2017, the country will see lots of
opportunity in the electrical and
power sector with massive electricity
requirements coming in. IEEMA is
working on launching new initiatives
like smart grid cells and also working
on the "Evolution of India Vision
2020" in consultation with the
industry to make the world a cleaner,
greener and more efficient place"
R Krishnakumar, Chairman, RM
Division, IEEMA added "The
rotating machines sector during this
current fiscal had its ups and downs.
While during the first quarter of the
current year, renewed momentum in
industrial sectors and power
generation sector has seen a pick-up
in demand for both LT and HT
motors by over 10 per cent resulting
in overall growth of 9.3 per cent for
rotating machines sector, the sector's
growth declined in the third quarter.
ELROMA 2012 is being held at a
crucial juncture when the new
emerging global standards of energy
efficiency will shape a new future"
India is on an upward curve with
its economy growing at a
consistently fast pace of 8 per cent
annually thereby holds great promise
for the industrial growth and its
related opportunities. The Indian
electrical industry is growing at
annual rate of 10-12 per cent in value
terms and is well on its way to
become the manufacturing and
sourcing hub for the world. Keeping
the growth potential in mind, the
industry will also seek urgent
attention from the Central
Government at the highest level for
conducive policy initiatives while
entering into XII Plan so as to meet
laid down targets of power
generation capacity and related T&D
capacity expansions.
